Kathryn Loves: Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward

Last week, Joanna posted this darling photo of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, and it sent me searching for more pics of the famous Hollywood couple.

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward wed January 29, 1958 in Las Vegas, and there are so many delightful photos of them together that seem to explain how they stayed happily married for 50 years.

Joanne: Sexiness wears thin after a while and beauty fades, but to be married to a man who makes you laugh every day, ah, now that’s a real treat…

I imagine if you’re reading Snippet & Ink, you love flowers and invitations and all the lovely details that go into a wedding. But if you’re anything like me, you’re even more inspired by what could only be described as true love. Sweet, romantic, silly, mundane love. Eating popcorn together and snuggling up with a cup of tea…

I adore these two – look at the way he looks at her!

This? This is the reason there are weddings.

This is one of the most inspirational posts ever. From they way they are together and the love the exude in their photographs, to their style. Love everything. This would make great inspiration for an engagement shoot, or how to wear your hair for the big day…or any day for that matter (especially if you have short hair like me). Thanks for the amazing post!

I love this! I saw the post on A Cup of Jo, and I was curious about them but didn’t look them up. These photos are so beautiful and I love that you reminded us that true love is why we get to marvel at the prettiness of weddings. Great post!

  9. Cynthia G. says:

Love! This is love. You can just tell can’t you? The first picture is what showed up on my feed (the trombone) and I thought of my wonderful man and his Saxophone and how I always interrupt him cause he’s so dang cute when he plays. Then I scrolled down and fell in love with the similarities that silly, true love, resonates in the heart of those who are truly in love as well. Beautiful, great find!!!

    xoxo Cynthia

  11. Jess says:

Thank you for posting this! I just got married a few weeks ago and in the sea of divorces and unhappy marriages it’s so refreshing to see a couple that loved each other and weren’t afraid to be silly with one another.

    Such an inspiration!

  12. Ashley B says:

Love them! My husband and I took inspiration from their wedding vows when we were writing our own. Love the last line.

“Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens. A good marriage must be created. In the Art of Marriage: The little things are the big things. It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives. It is standing together facing the world. It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family. It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy. It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways. It is not expecting the husband to wear a halo or the wife to have wings of an angel. It is not looking for perfection in each other. It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor. It is having the capacity to forgive and forget. It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow. It is finding room for the things of the spirit. It is a common search for the good and the beautiful. It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal, dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal. It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.”

More of this, please! I love wedding inspiration as much as the next person but marriage/ relationship inspiration is always a nice reminder as to why we are taking these vows in the first place. The wedding is one day but marriage is a lifetime.

  40. Kate says:

Love this. LOVE this. Thank you.

  41. Those are great photos. Especially because they are taken over many years. I saw a post not too long ago at thegracefulwife.blogspot.com that shows lots and lots of pictures of Kate Middleton smiling at William. On the blog, the writer says something about how she first noticed during the wedding that every time William looked at Kate, she smiled. I look forward to seeing what their pictures look like in 30 years. I hope she is still smiling at him.

I have always respected Paul Newman because of his adoration of his wife. There’s no doubt in my mind that that couple embodies everything that true love is. But, it’s easy to say sexiness wears thin when you are married to a man who ages well and never loses his looks ;)

  63. This is why I love you and your BLOG Kathryn!!! You are real! And this is totally what being a wedding photographer is all about. I love details and beautiful portraits but that is peripheral to what is central… The love share by two individuals that joins them together… That’s what a wedding is about! Individuality of personalities joined in unity of marriage! Thank you for reminding us all! And thanks God for couples like Joanne and Paul!!! :)
